Ginger and Garlic: Wonder Foods


When my son came down with a terrible headache and the beginning of a rasping cough, my daughter-in-law strode into the kitchen and made him her well-known concoction for colds and flu: pressed garlic, minced ginger, honey and hot water.

“Maybe some Tylenol would help him as well,” I suggested.

“This will do,” she said. ”Trust me.”

And she was right. The next morning, he was on his feet, bright, alert and symptom-free.

His quick recovery comes as no surprise to me. Ginger and garlic have been for centuries the most popular of home remedies. Closer inspection reveals why they work so well and why, in straightforward cases of colds and flu, they are perhaps even better alternatives than over the counter prescriptions.

Ginger has been used as both seasoning and medicine for over 50 years. During the Middle Ages, it was used against the plague. Today, it is used for ailments that run from simple colds and sniffles to rheumatoid arthritis.

Its effectiveness against headaches has been documented. Taken at the first sign of migraine, ginger can reduce the symptoms and severity of headaches by blocking prostaglandins—the chemicals that cause inflammation in blood vessels in the brain. This anti-inflammatory activity in ginger can shorten the discomfort of headaches, colds and flu.

As well, ginger blocks the production of substances that cause bronchial congestion and stuffiness. Its main compounds, gingerols, are natural cough suppressants.

It works as well to reduce joint swellings in people who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. A recent study found that ginger eased the symptoms in 55 percent of people with osteoarthritis and 74 percent of those with rheumatoid arthritis. Considering the health implications of drugs like Vioxx and Celebrex, ginger seems a much safer and more cost-effective alternative.

Ginger works like aspirin to thin the blood. A study involving Danish women between the ages of 25 to 65 years, one group of whom consumed 70 grams of raw onion daily while a second group consumed 5 grams of ginger daily for one week, showed unequivocally the benefits of ginger. When the researchers tested both groups of women, they found that ginger, more clearly than onion, reduced thromboxane production by almost 60 percent. Thromboxane compounds stimulate the clumping of blood platelets and the constricting of blood vessels. By dissolving the clumping quality of blood platelets, ginger reduces blood clots and the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

But this is not all! Ginger can also relieve menstrual cramps. Chemical compounds in ginger act as anti-spasmodics inhibiting painful contractions of both smooth muscles of the digestive tract and the uterus.

Garlic is no less powerful. The restorative powers of garlic have been known to the ancient Egyptians who gave garlic to slaves constructing the pyramids in order to increase their efficiency and stamina.

Garlic, like ginger, reduces the tendency of blood to clot. Garlic improves blood flow throughout the body, not just in the coronary arteries. It acts as a vasodilator by causing blood vessels to expand and blood pressure to drop. Researchers at the Garlic Research Bureau in Suffolk, England, recently reported that “even small amounts of Garlic, say 3 or 4 grams, will have a pronounced effect on fibrinolytic (breaking down of blood clots) activity…in doses from 25 grams ( 10 cloves) to 50 grams Garlic seems to be highly effective in promoting beneficial changes in blood fat composition and platelet adhesiveness.”

It also lowers cholesterol, tryglycerides and LDL cholesterol levels while also increasing the beneficial cholesterol HDL.

And it has anti-tumor properties. Garlic oil inhibits enzymes that curtail the production of protaglandins ( many cancers are prostaglandin dependent). Research in China also shows an inverse relationship between the incidence of stomach cancer and garlic intake. Studies even suggest that garlic may lower the risk of colon cancer by 35 percent and stomach cancer by as much as 50 percent. Garlic inhibits the formation of nitrites, chemicals that could trigger stomach cancer. There is also laboratory evidence that garlic can shrink cancers of the breast, skin and lungs.

One more thing-- garlic’s essential oil is excreted through the lungs, which means that it is particularly effective for clearing respiratory ailments.

No wonder my son made such a rapid recovery. He took the kids tobogganing down the hill, returning all of them later that afternoon, cheeks red and happy.

Traditional Treatment Methods for Diabetes




The American Diabetes Association estimates that diabetes accounts for over 100,000 deaths, 54,000 amputations, and over 20,000 cases of blindness each year. Blindness is twenty-five times more common among diabetic patients when compared to those without diabetes. If these current trends should continue, then by the year 2010 diabetes will exceed both heart disease and cancer as the leading cause of death in America.
Diabetics tend to have a high level of blood glucose. Blood sugar level is regulated by insulin, which releases it to carbohydrate consumption. Insulin causes the cells of the body to absorb glucose from the blood. The glucose is then used as fuel for cellular functions.
Traditional diagnostic standards for diabetes have been plasma glucose levels greater than 140 milligrams on 2 occasions as well as plasma glucose greater than 200 milligrams following a 75 gram glucose load. Even more recently, the American Diabetes Association lowered the criteria for a diabetic diagnosis to plasma glucose levels equal to or greater than 126 milligrams. The more intense the exercise, the faster your body will use glucose. It is always important to understand the differences in exercising with diabetes. It is also important for the individual who has diabetes to check with a physician before beginning an exercise program.
When training with a diabetic person, you must always take into consideration the dangers of injecting insulin before working out. An individual with type I diabetes who is injecting their normal amount of insulin before exercise, can pose the risk of hypoglycemia or insulin shock.
General exercise rules for type I diabetics are the following:
1) Allow adequate rest during exercise to prevent high blood pressure.
2) Use low impact exercises and avoid heavy weight lifting.
3) Always have food with a lot of carbohydrates ready.
If blood sugar levels get too low, the individual may feel shaky, disoriented, hungry, and become highly irritable. Consuming a carbohydrate snack or beverage will terminate these symptoms in a short period of time.
Before using an exercise plan, it is always important for blood sugar levels to be tested. Make sure that they are between 100 and 250 milligrams. Glucose levels should also be tested before, during, and after exercise or any strenuous physical activity. During their recovery period, it is important for diabetics to consume high carbohydrates in order to prevent hypoglycemia.
Exercise will greatly benefit an individual specifically with type 2 diabetes. This is due to the positive effects on insulin sensitivity. Proper exercise and nutrition are by far the best forms of prevention for type 2 diabetics. To prevent hypoglycemia, continuously work up to more active exercises.

How to be more Mentally Alert


Mental alertness is quick-wittedness, keenness, and sharpness of the mind that is evident in a person's ability to concentrate, pay attention, think rationally, capture and comprehend ideas. Mentally alert people are also intelligent individuals. In the course of time, the mental ability and alertness of a person diminishes as an effect of environmental changes and influence. Time, lifestyle and practice are contributory factors to decreased mental alertness.

To be more mentally alert, individuals are advised to maintain a reading habit to keep the brain active and working. Reading is a good mental exercise that stimulates creativity and comprehension skills. Furthermore, it is the easiest to maintain among other hobbies so there is no reason for people not to exercise their brains.

There are many different ways to keeping and improving mental alertness aside from reading. Physical and meditative exercises, like yoga and tai chi, are a good way to relax the mind and facilitate the release of right chemicals into the brain to keep it alert. Yoga is a known mental relaxation and revitalization exercise that is done through concentration and emptying the mind.

Learning new things daily is another good mental activity. Storing new information on a regular basis compels the brain to sustain a higher level of alertness to cope with the learning activity. Engaging into conversations, watching informative TV programs and maintaining good or active conversations with people are also good brain exercises. Again, reading can be a good vehicle to learning new things.

Getting enough sleep is important to staying and becoming more mentally alert. People who sleep five hours or less everyday tend to become absent-minded and forgetful. Sleeping is the best way for the brain to relax and recuperate adequately from a daylong work.

Some experts believe that a healthy and balanced diet can improve mental alertness. However, this still needs further research verification. Some food ingredients and properties like sugar and caffeine can keep the brain alert. But for people with sleeping problems, taking caffeine is not advisable. Alcohol, drugs, solvents and other chemicals taken can have damaging effects to the brain that do not only decrease its capacity to be alert but also deteriorate its capacity to do normal functioning.

There are mental energy boosters or enhancers available in drug stores; although, using them is nonetheless advisable as it inhibits the brain from working naturally. However, if this is an option for a certain period of time, like for a time being when a licensure exam will be taken, seeing a doctor for prescriptions will be a safer option.

Finally, to be more mentally alert, it is also necessary for every individual to have a positive outlook and attitude in life. Too much stress and anxiety can affect a person's ability to make sound decisions and actions to a situation. Too much worry does not help in exercising the mind; instead, it stresses it and impedes creativity to flow in. People's choices and beliefs can have an impact to how one become more mentally alert. So having a full understanding and knowledge about mental health is important.

Curing Athlete's Foot with Home Remedies



Athlete's foot is an itchy, parasitic fungal infection of the skin of your foot, usually between the toes, which causes scaling, flaking, itching and cracking of the skin. It is typically caused by a mold (but in some cases a yeast) that grows on the surface of the skin and then gets into the cracks between the toes. Although the malady more commonly affects males than females, it's estimated to be the second most common skin disease in the United States, after acne. The fungus thrives in warm, damp environments, such as the locker rooms, health clubs, public showers and indoor swimming pools.



Prevention of athlete's foot can be achieved in many ways and should be practiced especially in public places. The first place to start prevention is to use a antibacterial and anti-fungal soap such as GymSoap. Always wear shower shoes or sandals in locker rooms or public showers and baths. Be sure you wash your feet with soap and dry thoroughly especially between your toes.



Some of the personal prevention measures you can take include wearing well-ventilated shoes, wear cotton or moisture wicking polyester socks, use foot powder, change shoes every day and replace old sneakers. These are just a few of the ways to prevent or keep your athlete's foot in check



Natural treatments are my favorite way to prevent and cure athlete's foot. Here are some that I've used or heard about working:



White Vinegar-Make a solution of one part of vinegar and four parts of lukewarm water. Soak the infected foot in that solution for half an hour twice daily.



Tea tree oil-After you have soaked your feet in the vinegar water, rub tea tree oil on your toes and wherever you have athletes foot.



Aloe Vera-I find that this worked about as well as anything I tried. Make sure your feet are dry and massage it into the affected areas. It will stop the itching also.



Hydrogen Peroxide-Apply with a Q-Tip or cotton swab after washing or soaking your feet. Allow to dry. If you wish, you may follow with an application of apple cider vinegar.



Eucalyptus oil-apply a few drops to the affected areas two to three times daily. It will kill the fungi and relieve the itching.

Tea-Fill a large bowl with a quart of boiling water and add six tea bags. Soak your feet for up to an hour. The tannic acid in tea kills some of the fungus and is soothing for painful, itchy feet.



Baking soda-Using baking soda as a powder on your feet and between your toes after you shower and dry your feet and toes thoroughly is helpful.



Household bleach-Wash your socks and towel with bleach in the water. Wipe out your shoes with a bleach water mixture and let dry, then spray well with Lysol and let dry. Also use Lysol on the tub, shower, and foot tub. Do not dry - spray till wet and let air dry.



Corn starch-is effective in soaking moisture, so keep your toes and fee dry by sprinkling corn starch on them.



Garlic-Either crush or blend a couple cloves of garlic. Then rub it into the skin where you have athlete's foot. It will take 2 to 3 days to heal all of the dry dead skin but works great.



Boric acid-Sprinkled in your socks will prevent athlete's foot, especially if you've had infections before. Don't use this to treat the problem though.



Hair dryer-Athlete's foot thrives in moist and your hair dryer can aid in the drying the feet after bathing or between baths if you feet become moist.



Epsom salts-Some podiatrists recommend soaking the feet in a solution of Epsom salts in warm water.



Yogurt-To help ease the symptoms, you can put plain yogurt on the affected area as often as you want. A small amount of yogurt will surely soothe itchiness and redness.



Alcohol and Aspirin-Dissolve about 5 aspirin in 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol and rub over your feet after showering or bathing, the aspirin will soak into the skin due to the alcohol mixture.



Antiperspirant/deodorant-regularly apply stick antiperspirant/deodorant to the feet, especially between the toes.



Vicks Vapor Rub-has also been touted as cure. Rub it between your toes or other affected area.



Listerine-applied to the infected area is said to cure athlete's foot also.



The next time you or someone you know has athlete's foot try some of these remedies instead of spending your hard earned money on OTC or even prescription drugs that don't work as well. Some of these natural cures I've never tried but they sound like they would work. Many of them have been used for years so someone you know probably has some information on them. Even if they don't work they won't harm your health if you use them as suggested. If you think they might be a problem don't try them.
