What's a common disease that over 5 million Americans suffer from and many may not even be aware they have it? Hypothyroidism and related forms of thyroid dysfunction!

The thyroid gland looks like a little bow tie and is located at the base of the throat, below the Adam's apple in males. Thyroid dysfunction affects both males and females. This gland produces hormones which control the body's metabolism, your internal thermostat of sorts.

Thyroid dysfunction is generally either an over or under production of the hormone. Under active thyroid hormone production is called hypothyroidism; whereas too much, or overactive thyroid hormone production is called hyperthyroidism.

They will test to check TSH levels (the thyroid stimulating hormone produced by the pituitary gland) and T4 levels (the main thyroid hormone). Other doctors prefer to take a more holistic approach and are able to diagnose based on symptoms. Morning body temperature readings (below 97.1 consistently) as well as discovery of regular waking up approximately four hours after going to bed, can aid in the diagnosis.

There are chemical, synthetic treatments that can be used to restore healthy thyroid functions, such as Synthroid and Levothyroxine.

Garlic: Garlic is a remedy for whooping cough. Crush the cloves of garlic and extract the juice. Take 1 tsp of the juice twice a day.

Vegetables like spinach, cabbage, gourds, should be taken in a boiled from without addition of any condiments. Whole meal bread and roasted potatoes could also be given.

Belleric Myroblan (Terminalia belerica) The fruit of the belleric myroblan has excellent curative powers in the treatment of coughs caused due to catarrh.

Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) Cloves can reduce the irritation of the throat. Cloves are more effective if the coughs are produced due to inflammation of the pharynx.

A very simple way to stop coughs in the night is to place three to four pieces of long pepper in the mouth. Chew them slightly so that their extract oozes into the mouth. As long as the peppers remain in the mouth, the urge to cough will be suppressed and you will get a restful sleep at night.

Gargle sage leaves and elder blossom tea with a little almond oil, oil of clove, and honey to reduce the cough and soothe the throat.

A teaspoon of honey, a pinch of turmeric powder, chewing cardamom for a while, a stick of clove, all these have proven very beneficial in treating dry cough.

Make a syrup by combining 1 teaspoonful of raw onion juice with 1 teaspoonful of honey; let it stay for 3-4 hours, and take in doses. This is the useful Home Remedy for Cough.

Thyme for Cough: The extracted oil thymol of thyme is used as an antibiotic and expectorant. In fact, this herb is commonly used in most commercial cough syrup formulation. Thyme in syrup, tincture, tea, and oil form is very effective in treating coughs.

Take 5 grams of powdered Licorice root with honey thrice in a day. You can also make a decoction by using teaspoon to one cup of water. Take three cups every day. Licorice has gentle and anti-inflammatory properties, and is an expectorant.

Its common sense that you cannot find remedy for a problem that you can't attach a name to. The symptoms for whooping cough are easily detectable and they are prolonged periods of a running nose, sneezing, dry cough and sometimes a high fever that can even hit 100 degrees. The first thing to take into consideration is just where the baggy eyes have come from. There are actually several sources that could be the cause of your puffy eyes. For some of you, the reason that you get them is from your genetic makeup. If this is the case, it can be very hard to get rid of them as your body's make up says it is to be so. Here, people are just born with a darker colored skin surrounding their eye.

The next thing you can do is the old-fashioned cucumber over the eyes trick. It works wonderfully because the cucumber juice helps get rid of the dark circles under the eyes. So place two fresh slices of cucumber onto your closed eyes and lay back for about half an hour. Repeat this process every day and you will soon start to see results.

If dryness is your problem, a lightweight, fragrance-free moisturizer will help. Be certain the moisturizer does not contain any irritating ingredients that could make matters worse. If you have time in the morning, place cool compresses on the eyes; if you don't have time, leave your moisturizer in the refrigerator to apply when you wake up. Alcohol consumption and a diet high in salt can cause water retention and increase puffiness around the eyes. Contact lenses can cause irritation and swelling, so be sure that you are wearing the most comfortable type for your vision correction.

I did some research on the internet. It's an allergy for sure, but against what? Probably against one of the cleaners I used in cleaning the kitchen of our new (fixer-upper) house. I also used a lot of Clorox there and also continued to use Clorox in decapsulating brine shrimp (for the aquarium fish). Could it be an allergy against chlorine?

Heredity can be involved in the condition, especially when we approach our 40s. Just look at your Mom or Granma to check if they have dark circles under their eyes, too. If yes, your under-eye puffiness is, most probably, a hereditary condition that runs in the family and there is really not much you can do about it

If you suffer from under-eye puffiness on a regular basis, check if it is related to your monthly cycle. If puffiness appears several days before your period, consider it a manifestation of PMS. Try to use natural diuretics, such as green tea, and eliminate salty foods, most carbohydrates, and excess liquid from your menu about one week prior to your period. Such measures should drastically reduce hormonal-induced dark circles and puffiness under your eyes, which are caused by premenstrual water retention.

Fill a small bowl with iced water or ice-cold milk. Soak a cottonwool pad with the liquid and lie down with the dampened pads over your eyes. Replace the pads as soon as they become warm. Continue for 15 minutes. As well as reducing puffiness, this treatment will brighten the whites of your eyes. Drink of enough water will also reduce eye puffiness. When a person is dehydrated the body starts storing water as a defense system and this will add to puffy eyes, so drink around 8-10 glass of water daily to get rid of puffy eyes. Make sure you get enough sleep with regular timings.

But even though you can't predict when toothaches occur, there are things that you can do to ease the pain (or get rid of it altogether). Toothaches generally occur at night especially when you're sleeping, so knowing how to deal with toothaches and other tooth problems is a must.

Emergency Ways to Relieve Toothaches

When your tooth hurts, here are some things that you can do as first-aid measures before you head over to your dentist.

1. Gargle with warm water. Sometimes, toothaches are caused by particles trapped between teeth or inside a tooth cavity. These particles can take the form of food stuck between teeth, which tooth bacteria feed on. If the pain is too unbearable that you can't brush your teeth, you can try gargling with warm water. Doing this will rinse off all trapped particles between your teeth. Flossing can also do the trick, but be careful not to injure your gums as any injury will later cause another dental problem.

2. Put a drop of tea tree oil into the aching tooth. Another homemade remedy for toothache is tea tree oil. Tea tree oil has natural antibacterial properties which help get rid of tooth bacteria. A drop of tea tree oil on the aching tooth or the gums surrounding the tooth will ease the pain. Tea tree oil has a very strong taste so it can be mixed with a few drops of water but it will still yield the same results. The solution must be spat out after gargling.

3. Put hot tea bag on the gums. Aside from tea tree oil, herbal tea bags work wonders, too. Place the hot tea bag on the gums where the aching tooth is.

4. Apply cold compress. Cold compress may be applied on the aching area for twenty minutes especially if the toothache comes with an abscess. This procedure reduces the swelling and can help numb the pain.

5. Don't think about it. Sometimes, a toothache is all in the mind. The more you think about it, the more the pain escalates. Some people prefer to lie down and focus on the pain, but this is not a good idea. If this is your idea of dealing with a toothache, get up and do your usual routine. No matter what you do, vigorous physical activities should be avoided at all times so as not to stress the muscles or the body.

6. Take pain relievers. The easiest but not necessarily the best remedy to get rid of toothaches is to take pain relievers. Take pain relievers sparingly.


Once you're done with any of these suggested ways, you can head over to your dentist and get the appropriate dental treatment. Be prepared for the following procedures to be done: tooth extraction, dental implantology (or just implantology), immediate dental implants, oral implants, and dental bridges.

* Daily skin and facial care is much more effective in making us look beautiful than any cosmetics in the world. Here we are going to discuss some of the tips and tricks that we can use to make us look younger and more beautiful without spending too much of extra time and money:
* Get a quick facial at home by splashing the face with lots of warm water and then massaging it with olive oil to moisturize the skin. Use a half-teaspoon of sugar for scrubbing your face and keep rubbing it until it melts away. Wipe off your face with a warm, wet cloth.
* Use the toning mixture of equal parts of water and vinegar and dissolve few aspirins in it twice a day to counter any aging signs in your face. Vinegar flakes off dead skin cells while aspirin is a superb anti-acne product and is also effective on deep acne spots. However, it tends to make skin thinner like store bought toner and so sun block with at least SPF 15 should be used essentially everyday.
* Wash the face several times a day and wipe off with a clean cloth to keep acne off the oily skin.
* If the eyes look puffy or swollen, wash the face and cover the eyes with sliced potatoes or cucumbers for a few minutes. This is really effective in the morning.
* Olive oil works well as face and eye makeup remover.
* Clean the nails with white vinegar before applying nail polish for a smoother finish and make it last longer.
* Olive oil mixed with melted beeswax is a great lip balm.
Apply whole egg mayonnaise on the face (right from the jar) for about 20 minutes. Rinse with cool water. Great skin care treatment.
Mash up a peach (use ripe, canned or frozen) and mix in a tablespoon of brandy. Leave it on for 20 minutes, then rinse off.
For oily skin, mash up a ripe tomato and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm (not hot) water.
Mash up a very ripe banana. Add just enough honey to make a soft pulp. Apply over face and hair. This is such a great firming mask that aging movie stars have been known to put it in the cups of their bras to make their breasts "perky." (Just make sure that you don't use too much honey and you use a sturdy bra.)
Apply pure honey (straight from the bottle) to your face and neck. Allow it to set until dry (about 15 minutes). Rinse with very warm water.
Apply it straight from the bottle. Let it dry for about five to ten minutes. Rinse off with warm water, and then gently pat your face dry with a fluffy towel.
This is a face mask particularly suited for those with sensitive skin. In the same way that this product coats the stomach, it gently caresses the face. Apply it straight from the bottle, using a cotton swab. Allow to dry, and then rinse with cool water.
There are many face masks that can be made at home. Natural ingredients you may have in your fridge can be used to make some of the best face masks. Fruit masks are particularly good for oily skin. Try some of these to keep your skin nourished.
* Mash banana with honey and apply to your skin. Leave for ten minutes.
* Combine cucumber and yoghurt. Add some honey if you wish. Leave for twenty minutes.
* Mash avocado and apply to your face. Leave for twenty minutes. This is a good face mask for dry skin. You can also add honey.
* Mix strawberries with honey. Leave on your skin for fifteen minutes.
* Mash some grapes and apply to your skin. Add some oat meal or almond meal for more texture.
* Haldi face masks combine turmeric with rose water or milk. It is also supposed to reduce the appearance of fine hair. A haldi face mask is not suitable for people with sensitive skin.
* Egg Yolk & Honey Mask:
Take 1 tablespoon honey, 1 egg yolk, 1/2 teaspoon almond oil and 1 tablespoon yogurt. Mix together and apply on face. Honey smoothes the skin, egg and almond oil moisturize, and yogurt refines and tightens pores. Leave for 20 mints to half an hour.
* Banana Face Mask:
Mash 1/4 ripe banana and mix with half a cup natural yogurt and 1 tablespoon of honey. Apply this pack on face and neck and leave for 20 minutes and then rinse off.
* Olive oil and Egg Mask:
Mix 1 egg yolk with 1 tbsp. olive oil & 1 tbsp. plain yogurt. Apply on face and leave for 20 minutes.
* Egg Yolk, Avocado & Mud Facial Mask:
Buy fuller's earth mud / clay from any health store. Mix 1 tablespoon dry clay, 1 egg yolk, 1/4 of a mashed avocado and enough witch hazel to create a smooth mixture. Mud dries excess sebum while Witch hazel tones the skin.
* Lemon Face Mask:
Mix 1 tbsp. lemon juice with 1/4 cup ground oatmeal and 1 tbsp. yogurt. Apply on face and leave for 20 minutes, then wash off with warm water.
* Turmeric Mask:
Take some turmeric powder, and mix with gram flour and rose water. Apply on face for 20 minutes and then wash off with water.
* Homemade Clay Mask:
Clay masks hydrate and tone your skin. Take some fuller's earth clay, 1 tsp honey, water. Mix together and apply on face. Wash off after 20 minutes.
* Rose Water Mask:
Take some natural rose water or crushed rose petals; mix with natural yoghurt, honey and some water. Apply on face and wash off after 15 minutes.
* Oatmeal Face Mask:
This soothing mask is great for chapped, sunburned or irritated. Take 1 cup natural yogurt, honey and ½ cup oatmeal. Mix the ingredients together & apply on face for 15 minutes.
* Sugar mask:
This mask works well for ageing and maturing skin that uses sugar, since it is a natural exfoliant and will help soften the lines and wrinkles on face. Take 2 spoons powdered sugar, 4 tbsp warm water and dissolve. Apply to the face and leave for 10 minutes. Gently massage and wash off.
* Banana Mask for wrinkles:
Mash 1/4 banana until it is very smooth. Apply on face and leave for 15-20 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Then use cold water to close the pores.
* Egg White Mask:
Simply apply egg white on face covering all the wrinkles and fine lines. Wash off after half an hour.
* Wash the face twice a day to avoid breakouts and zits.
* DO take a shower at least every day (every other day is alright too)
* DO NOT eat too many greasy foods

Take 1 table spoon 3 times a day 30 minutes before meal. When all the juice is gone take a break for 3 months. After the break repeat the process for 3 more months, and then for 3 more. That should be enough for the liver to clear out completely.

Mix equal portions of a horsetail herb, corn stigmas, knotweed and calendula flowers. Boil 1 table spoon of the mix for 2 minutes in 2 cups of boiling water and steep for 30-40 minutes. Then filter and drink 0,5 cup 3 times a day after meal. Continue for 3 weeks, take a break for a week and repeat for 1 more week.

This method is good for people with a beginning stage of hepatitis. Mix equal parts of barberry berries, birch leaves, wormwood and yarrow. Put 1 table spoon of the mix in 1 cup of boiling water and steep for 30 minutes. Drink 1 cup in the morning and in the evening.

Combine 3 parts of knotweed grass, 1 part of chamomile flowers, 2 parts of buckthorn, 4 parts of St. John's wort grass and 4 parts of everlasting flowers. Put 4 tbsp of the mix in 1 L of cold water and keep overnight. In the morning boil for 5-10 min and filter when it cools down. Drink first cup in the morning on an empty stomach, the rest divide in 4 and take 1 hour after each meal. Drink ½ cup of pumpkin juice every day.

In 1 cup of cold boiled water add some honey and few drops of lemon juice. Drink at night before going to bed.

Gall bladder and gall bladder stones:

Cut 2 grapefruits with the skin into small pieces, then put in 1 1/2 L of water and let stand through the night, and then filter. Drink 1 cup in the morning before breakfast.

Drink olive oil 30 min before meal. Start from 1/2 tsp and slowly increase an intake to 1/2 cup. Treatment takes 2-3 weeks.

Teen pregnancies are still the norm in much of the developing world. Each child born to a young girl normally is considered a blessing.
Despite the fact that the teen birth rate is slowly falling, there are still an estimated one million teen pregnancies in the United States alone. About 85% of these pregnancies are unplanned, which in any population can increase the risk for problems. The biggest risk for teen mothers is delaying prenatal care or worse, 7.2% received no care at all.
The reason for lack of prenatal care is usually delayed pregnancy testing, denial or even fear of telling others about the pregnancy. Most states have a health department or University clinic where prenatal care is free or low cost and patient confidentiality is very important, meaning no one can tell the teen mother's family.
Teenage mothers are less likely to gain adequate weight during their pregnancy, leading to Low Birth weight which is associated with infant and childhood disorders and a high rate of infant mortality. Low-birth weight babies are more likely to have organs that are not fully developed, which can result in complications such as bleeding in the brain, respiratory distress syndrome, and intestinal problems.
Children born to teenage mothers are less likely to receive proper nutrition, health care, and cognitive and social stimulation. As a result, they may have an underdeveloped intellect and attain lower academic achievement.


Effects of teen pregnancies on the children involved. These children are far more likely to grow up in poverty, to have more health problems, to suffer from higher rates of abuse and neglect, to fail in school, to become teen mothers, to commit delinquent acts and adult crimes, and to incur failed adult marriages and other relationships.

The burdens of early childbearing on disadvantaged teens are undeniable. Trying to untangle the factors which contribute to teenage pregnancy from its effects, however, leads to a "which came first, the chicken or the egg?" dilemma. Educational failure, poverty, unemployment and low self-esteem are understood to be negative outcomes of early childbearing. These circumstances also contribute to the likelihood of teen pregnancy.

In general, teen mothers have much lower levels of educational attainment than other women, which severely limit their career options and sharply increase their likelihood of economic dependency. Only 70% of teen mothers complete high school or earn a GED, and far fewer risk Factors. Although it is not inevitable, some life circumstances place girls at higher risk of becoming teen mothers. These include poverty, poor school performance, growing up in a single parent household, having a mother who was an adolescent mother, or having a sister who has become pregnant.

Teenage pregnancies have become a public health issue because of their observed negative effects on perinatal outcomes and long-term morbidity. The association of young maternal age and long-term morbidity is usually confounded, however, by the high prevalence of poverty, low level of education, and single marital status among teenage mothers.

Children of teenage mothers have significantly higher odds of placement in certain special education classes and significantly higher occurrence of milder education problems, but when maternal education, marital status, poverty level, and race are controlled, the detrimental effects disappear and even some protective effects are observed.

There are several ways of preserving chilies and my favorite has to be drying, but more of that later.

The simplest way to preserve a chili is to freeze it. One of the major problems with this is that the chili then loses its eating quality. If you eat a raw chili, and be very careful here about the strength of any chili you eat, there is a crispy crunchy texture to the chili. If you defrost a chili and try this then you will find that this crispness has gone and the texture is soggy. This may not be a problem depending on what you intend to use the chili for. If it is to cook with then there are no drawbacks to freezing and I often just cut the stalk off the chilies and put them through a food processor to make a firm paste which I then freeze in ice cube trays. Once these are frozen I can put them in a bag and take out as many as I need to cook with.

Another way is to make some chili oil. There are many recipes on the internet for this and I suggest you try one of these but they all follow similar principles. Use top quality olive oil as the base, chop your chilies, add other ingredients and gently cook your ingredients in the oil. When finished allow to cool and strain the ingredients out. Bottle the chili oil. When I make this I only make small quantities as I have read that as the oil has had other ingredients added then bacteria could develop over time. I have seen it recommended that you should not keep home made chili oil more than about one month. Just remember that the more chilies you add the stronger the heat. I one tried adding some hot home made chili oil to a salad dressing. It ruined the salad so just think about what you are going to use it for.

As I have already mentioned, my favorite way of preserving chilies has to be drying and there are a few ways of doing this, some complicated, some easy. You can dry them overnight in an oven at a very low setting but I have never done this as it just seems too complicated. As easier way, (if you have one), is to use a food dryer and set this to the time recommended by your manufacturer. For those of you who do not have a food dryer, you simply space the food out on trays and switch it on. It dehumidifies the food and removes the moisture, preserving it over time. Simple enough to use, but I do not have one and I do not fancy spending lots of money to buy one just to dry chilies.

A shopkeeper in an Asian supermarket I use once told me the best way to dry chilies is simply to wrap a bunch of chilies in newspaper, put it on the top of a cupboard and just leave them. I tried this but one of the chilies rotted and this spoiled several more. If you use this method check them regularly for chilies which are spoiling. Another method is to string the chilies and air dry. Do this by threading the chilies using a needle on to a strong thread and hanging in a warm room to dry.

Whilst both these methods work, I have also tried two more methods. One is to dry them in a muslin bag next to a radiator. This works very well but the chilies dry very fast and become hard, so hard in fact that you cannot easily cut them with a knife. This is fine if you want to grind the chilies into chili powder or flakes for cooking but they are not too good for eating.

My favorite method of drying chilies is to simply put them in a tray and dry them on a windowsill. This is near a radiator but this is not always on. The windowsill gets sun on it for about 5 hours a day, (when it is sunny). Every couple of days, I simply stir the chilies up with my fingers and this also allows me to spot any which are spoiling. I remove these. The chilies are finished when I feel they are dry enough but still feel leathery. At this stage I simply keep them in an old biscuit tin and use them as needed. One thing I do though is keep the green stalks on the end of the chilies as these help to draw the moisture out from the middle of the chili. I cut this off when using the dried chilies.

Whichever method you use just make sure that surfaces and any utensils you use are clean as you do not want to introduce any disease to your harvest. You can also start the drying process off by leaving the chilies on the plant and not watering but only do this at the end of the growing season when production of new chilies has stopped. By leaving the chilies on the plant they will start to dry out naturally. Just watch them for mould or rot though and harvest immediately this is spotted on any plant.

It is very common in people who are hospitalized, in nursing homes or being treated at home. In the initial stages the bed sore is red in color with terrible pain and finally turns purple. If it is not treated properly the sore breaks open to cause infection. Further complications can take place if starts infecting the bone and other muscle areas. Common areas of infection are hip, spine, lower back, elbows, heels, buttocks and shoulder blades.

Bedsores are not a pleasant topic. But they can be a fact of life for anyone who can''t care for themselves, from an ailing parent confined to a wheelchair to a bedridden friend facing an extended recuperation from an accident or chronic condition. Also called pressure ulcers, bedsores are caused by constant pressure on part of the body, usually on areas that cover a bony area, such as the lower back, hips, buttocks, and heels.


1. Avoid raising the head of the bed more than 30 degrees. A higher incline makes it more likely that you''ll slide down, putting you at risk of friction and shearing injuries. If the bed needs to be higher when you eat, place pillows or foam wedges at your hips and shoulders to help maintain alignment.

2. Pouring sugar and honey poultice on the wound, it removes the poison from the wound.

3. Avoid massaging skin over bony areas. Change body position at least every 2 hours- more frequently in a chair. Reduce friction ( rubbing) by lifting rather than dragging. Do not use donut shape cushions. These can increase the risk of getting pressure ulcers by reducing blood flow in the areas of contact with the cushion.

4. Have nutritious food enriched with vitamins, minerals like zinc and other important health elements. Drink water as much as you can and avoid dehydration. This will help in strengthening the immune system of the body.

5. The wedges can be used to treat and/or prevent various conditions, such as sleep apnea, snoring, bed sores, etc. The wedges may also be made from foam rubber or the like in which case the inflation is not required.

6. Mix powdered comfrey leaves and slippery elm in equal parts to make a paste. Put this paste on piece of cloth and tie it to the sore overnight. To disinfect the area you can sprinkle goldenseal or echinacea powder. Later cover it with cotton.

7. Fill Lysol in a spray can and spray it daily on the entire body.

8. You can also apply zinc oxide ointment, aloe vera, wheat germ oil or comfrey.

9. Padding made of sheepskin also reduces the moisture produced on the skin when you lie in one position or area for too long. Sheepskin fibers can hold 30 to 36% of the moisture without becoming damp. The elimination of moisture from the skin and into the fibers is another way of relieving or even preventing bed sores from happening.
